Pillowcases

My bedroom has been decorated in light blue and brown for several years. The bedding has changed, but the colors have always stayed the same. When we moved to Virginia I added gold to the color scheme.  I was in Florida with my sisters and I bought some new pictures to hang over the bed, and that introduced gold into the mix. I found some decorative throw pillows, but could not find printed sheets or pillowcases in gold anywhere.

These are the pictures I bought at a Kirklands in Florida

This how they look over my bed with my gold pillows

I have had brown euro pillow shams on my bed for years and have been wanting to replace them with standard pillow shams in a gold print. I looked everywhere from department stores to on-line shopping, and just could not find any printed sheets in gold.

What do you do when you can't find something in the stores, make them!

I went to a Joann Fabric store and found two fabric bolts that I really liked.  One was really rich and shinny, and the other was muted with the same type of paisley pattern that is on my comforted. I bought two yards of each pattern.

This my favorite of the two fabrics. It looks very royal to me!

This is the muted brown and gold where the pattern compliments my comforter pattern.

All I was going to make was two sets of standard pillow cases. Nothing fancy, no trim or embellishments, just a case with a cuff that was all from the same fabric.  So, my next step was to find a YouTube instruction video. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel, so I am not going to give you step by step instruction when you can find dozens of videos on YouTube that are excellent on how to make a pillowcase. I used the burrito method, and it was so easy to follow the steps. The only trick was cutting the fabric into a straight rectangle. You may want to measure out a pattern with the dimensions on paper first to make sure your corners are square.

I watched the video called "How to make a standard pillowcase using Dilly Dally pillowcase pattern by Me & My Sister Design". There is also one called "Pillow Cases with Hidden Seams". Both use the burrito method and have the hidden seams so you do not have issues with fraying when they are washed.

I can also change the look by changing the throw. Here is a gold one!

Here is the Brown!

The finished products turned out great and gave me the look I was going for. I can change the cases and the throws every so often to give the bed a different look. The best part is I was not limited by what pillowcases were available in stores and got exactly what I wanted.
