Texas-Tulips

On our Spring outing to Pilot Point the day before Easter it was the perfect day to check out Texas-Tulips. This is a farm in Pilot Point owned by a couple from the Netherlands. Pieter and Petra Koeman lived in the Netherlands and found a realtor in Texas several years ago to help them find a farm to grow tulips. They have a very interesting story and you can read all about it on the Texas-Tulip website. I encourage you to go to the site and read about the Koemans.

The Texas-Tulips farm is open from mid February until late March-early April. We found out about the farm at the end of the growing season, so I think we just made it before they closed for the season.

This is what the farm looks like at the beginning of the season.

All of the row did not look like this when we were at the the farm.  But you can see all the varieties of tulips they have.
We arrived at the farm in the early afternoon and it was packed.  Parking is free and there was a $5 fee per person to enter.  Once in the gate you grab a basket and walk down the rows and rows of tulips, then you pick the tulips you want to buy, pay for them, have them wrapped, and then take them home with you. Each picked tulip costs $2.50. You are not to pull them up with the bulb, but pinch them at the base of the stem.

I definitely picked one of these!
When you have picked all the tulips you want, they have booths where you pay for your bouquet. The workers put a gel wrap on the stems, and wrap the bouquet in your color choice of tissue paper. The variety of types of tulips is simply amazing.  I truly had no idea there were so many.

My self picked Tulip Bouquet!
They were so beautiful!

I just may order some bulbs for next year.
I picked 8 tulips, took them home and put them on our patio table for Easter dinner. That's right we ate Easter dinner outside. I love Texas, and I love Texas-Tulips!

A Visit to Pilot Point, Texas

The Saturday before Easter my husband and I took a drive in the convertible to Pilot Point a very, very small town near Ray Roberts lake in North Texas.

There is a circle in the middle of the "downtown" area and across the street from the circle is a famous old  Farmers and Merchants bank building that is now an art gallery. The bank was used to film the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde. The bank was never really one of the banks that was robbed by the famous robbers, but the exterior and interior of the bank was used in the movie.

Then there is the coffee shop that was not opened while were in town on two different occasions. There were some bike riders standing outside the coffee shop that said the owner opens and closes when he wants. Must be nice, right?

This photo was taken on our first visit in January, and yes it was closed.
The crowned jewel of Pilot Point is the Magnolia Station restaurant. Magnolia Station is located in an old gas station, old pumps included.  The food is cooked in the gas station and the soda machine, glass canisters of ice tea, napkins, and utensils are in are a shed next to the station. All seating is outside and when we arrived at 11:30 on the Saturday before Easter, it was cool and very windy but that did not keep people away.  There was a line already formed and all the seats were in use.

The Magnolia Station main building.

The building on the right held all the drinks.
We got in line and waited to get to the window (which was held up by a piece of wood) to give our order to a curt gentleman that not only took the orders, but was also the person that plated the sides and delivered the food to the customers. This man was so busy taking the orders, taking the money, closing the window, grabbing the food from the cook, plating the sides, and delivering the food, back to open the window and take more orders. It was no wonder be was a bit curt with everyone. We made it to the window and placed our order.

My husband order the Old Fashion Burger with regular fries. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Club and sweet potato fries. Then we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited............. for what seemed like forever. There was even a point where I almost went up to "Curt" to see if maybe they lost our order. But, just when I though I could not wait any longer our food came out.

The old Fashion Burger with Regular Fries
Boy, was it worth the wait!!!! My husband liked the hamburger, but honestly it was not really that adventurous of an order.  My sandwich was a masterpiece. The chicken seemed to be marinated in something like Italian dressing and then grilled perfectly. Then there was bacon, avocado, lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomato, and basil mayo on a grilled Ciabatta bread. It was awesome. Just when I thought it couldn't be better I had one of the sweet potato fries and they were the best I have ever had. I am not sure if they were frozen or fresh, but they were cooked perfectly.

Oh My Stars! Don't you wish you could take a bite?

I am already looking forward to a return visit to try something different. What a true diamond in the rough.

Tulips at the Dallas Arboretum 2018

My Mother in-law loves tulips! On her 82nd birthday on March 17th we took her to see the tulips at the Dallas Arboretum. It was a beautiful Spring morning and we got to the Arboretum just as the doors opened and it was already crowded. There is a reason so many people come to see the stunning tulip displays, see if you agree after seeing the pictures from our visit.

Definitely not Mother of the Year

As a mother and grandmother I try to not judge other mothers or grandmothers. This is an exception. My husband and I were at a park in Austin and went to the cafe located in the park. We went in the cafe and sat at a table next to a table occupied by two young mothers and their toddler boys. One of the mothers was very attentive, and her son was very well behaved. Not so much for the other mother and child. This mother, let's call her Mary, had her son, we will call him Tim, sitting next to her in a highchair. Tim was sitting in his chair with a pacifier in his mouth while screaming and basically just being a little stinker. Mary does nothing to correct his behavior.

After a long wait for their food, and Tim disrupting the calm cafe dinning experience for all the patrons, their food arrives. The other mother at the table ordered her son a hot dog and chips. We all know that some of the top foods that are chocking hazards for kids are hot dogs, grapes, cherry tomatoes, peanut butter...... so, this mother did the right thing and cut up her son's hot dog into bite size pieces. Mary ordered Tim, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fruit, and she had a salad.

Tim takes his pacifier out of his mouth, lays it next to his plate and then demands something out of Mary's salad. So, what does she give him? A whole cherry tomato. Tim puts it in his mouth, whole, and then shoots it out because he doesn't like tomatoes. Which I know because as Mary is giving him the choking hazard she tells him he doesn't like them.

Tim decides to eat his fruit off his plate. What does he eat? Whole grapes! As I am watching this I am freaking out telling my husband that I am afraid Tim is going to choke. His Mom did not cut the grapes and did not pay any attention to him as he was eating them. As I am watching he puts 4 whole grapes in his mouth at one time, and was gagging as he was trying to chew them. Mary is clueless.

Now that the grapes are gone Tim decides he wants some lettuce out of Mary's salad. Does she give him a small leaf? Nope! She picks a huge leaf, puts it on the end of her index finger and literally shoves it into Tim's mouth until he gags. He cannot chew it, he is gagging until he is able to spit it out. Mary is clueless.

Tim is done with all of his fruit, did not eat any of the sandwich, thank goodness because I am sure he would have choked on the peanut butter. The waitress brings their checks and what does Mary do? She sits the check and pen right in front of Tim. Tim takes the pen and waves it around a bit and then grabs the bill. He waves it around as Mary asks him to give it to her, which he does not do. Tim then starts to wad it up. Does Mary take it from him? Nope! She lets him destroy it then takes him out of his highchair and puts him down. Off Tim runs out of the cafe door, and into the park with the check. Mary chases after him, and brings him back without the check.

Mary grabs a diaper and wipes, then takes Tim to the restroom to change his diaper. While she is gone the friend and her son are still sitting at the table. Then the strangest thing happens, a Dad sitting at a table next to them just walks over to Tim's highchair and takes it from Mary's table for his kid. He does not say a word to the mother still sitting there, he just takes the highchair and replaces it with a regular chair. Mary comes back, doesn't say a word about the missing highchair, and just puts Tim on the regular chair. Tim is now standing on the wood chair, and the waitress comes to pick up their payment when Mary asks if she can have another bill because her son destroyed it, and lost it somewhere. The waitress says she doesn't have any way to print another one (this is a very small operation) and asks Mary if maybe it was on the floor by the table or somewhere in the cafe. Mary said she thinks it is in the front of the cafe by the door, and then not thinking about Tim standing on the chair, she walks off to the front of the cafe. Tim jumps off the chair almost killing himself and takes off running. The poor Mom left at the table was trying to get Tim, and still not leave her kid alone at the table. This poor woman was so distressed, but chose her kid and hoped that Tim ran to his Mom in the front of the cafe. Mary walks back with Tim and the torn crumbled check.

The Moms pay their bills, and while doing so, Tim grabs his pacifier and sits under their table screaming. Mary tries to get him out from under the table so they can leave, and when he comes out he leaves his pacifier under the table. Mary asks him to go back and get the pacifier, and surprise, he refuses. Mary finally gets the pacifier, and carries sweet Tim under her arm out of the cafe kicking and screaming.

As I was telling this story have you been keeping track of all the bad decisions Mary made during this lunch? I am sure there are chapters in Dr Spock's books covering every one of this Mom's mistakes. And along with losing the Mother of the Year Award, Mary also lost the Friend of the Year Award. I think her friend had a very stressful lunch, and was probably very grateful that her son was such a well behaved toddler.

As for the highchair stealing Dad, what lessons was he teaching his kid? Who does that?

This was one of the most stressful lunches ever!

Grandma's Quilt

My Paternal Grandma was a quilter. I mean a hardcore, full size, wood frame, hand sewn quilter. I remember as a kid in the 60s and 70s goi...
